About Us:

Through Community Outreach, WINGS MINISTRY founder, Missy Settlemyre, became aware of children in her local community (Shallotte, NC) spending the weekend hungry.  Not in another country- but in her own hometown!  After researching and partnering with local schools and other volunteer organizations, WINGS Ministry piloted the Backpack Program in four schools.  As of January 2013, WINGS is currently serving 785 children each weekend! WINGS currently serves 7 schools in Brunswick County (Waccamaw School, Union Elementary, Supply Elementary, Virginia Williamson Elementary, Cedar Grove Middle, Shallotte Middle, and For Kids Only). 

Childhood Hunger: 

One out of every six children in the United States (12.4 million) is food-insecure. 

Over 62% of children in the U.S. Public School System are on Federal Free & Reduced Meal Program.    

Long-term childhood hunger can lead to a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization rates; lower IQ’s and academic achievement. 

Short-term childhood hunger leads to difficulty learning, the inability to focus in class along with the inability to retain knowledge. 

How our Program Works: 

Our Backpacks are filled with nutritious food for the Child and their family members! 

$ 50.00 feeds a family of four in our program for One month (4 weekends). 

Volunteers assist with fundraisers for the Backpack Program. 

WINGS Ministry donates the Backpacks for this program! 

100% of funds raised or donated are used to purchase food for the children in our program.

Each Friday, students receive their backpacks filled with the necessary food and nutrition for the weekend. 

Backpacks are returned on Monday & the children in this program are now ready to learn!

 Our Goals:  

(1)   To help put an end to childhood hunger! 

(2)   To provide nutritious meals for children over the weekend so they are better equipped to        

         achieve educational success.

(3)   To increase public awareness regarding the issue of childhood hunger in the United States.

WINGS is a 501(c) 3 organization making all donations tax deductible.

Bread of Life Outreach

Each week WINGS continues to provide to needy families in our community by distributing

Free Bread to Families, Seniors, Churches and other outreach programs.

WINGS helps combat the issue of childhood hunger and is dedicated to helping meet the needs

of hungry children.  Each week bags are filled with healthy, filling food and snacks.
